Inspired by Snapple???

Yesterday I was at the mall with my daughter. We ate in the food court and we drank our favorite drink - Snapple Peach Ice Tea (full strength, not diet). Every time we have it, my daughter says to me, "Daddy doesn't let me drink this." I always smile and say, "I know." She always smiles back and yesterday was no different. A little mother~daughter secret. You likely know that inside each Snapple cap is "Real Fact." I found yesterday's fact interesting....

Really??!! Wow!!
Well in that case, we'd better make it worth while.....

Unfortunately, I am unable to use YSL's luscious lipsticks as I have never found a color that suits me. I have to mix. Plus I really like the long-lasting ones. I use Revlon Color Stay Overtime. I mix Always Sienna with Timeless Nude. During the day, I use less Always Sienna, more Timeless Nude; at night visa versa ~ especially if I am going out on the town - more pop. I thought the Snapple fact was interesting and stuck the cap in my pocket. Next I went to my Clinique Counter to by my various lotions and potions that I was running low on. At another counter, they had a beautiful display of lipsticks. Given my Snapple cap, I ventured over to look. Wow, do they ever have some interesting colors out there. Being who I am, I almost immediately started thinking of color palettes and pops. I took note of the lipsticks that caught my eye (not that I would actually wear them but they certainly caught my eye) and searched for examples on the Internet. Found them! Next I looked for examples of the colors in designs - as the foundation of the palette or as pops. Found them too! I had a lot of fun with this. Inspiration comes in many forms and from many places - always be open - it simply is more fun that way! The images are from Traditional Home, a favorite publication of mine ~ except for the last one ~ that image is from Sarah Klassen's blog ~ Haute Design ~ who I read daily ~ I just think she is a huge talent. Enjoy!
FYI - I am signing off for a stretch. Today my daughter graduates from kindergarten and then we are off to Disney World. If I see any design inspiration there - and you know that I will - I'll fill you in when I return.

  1. Hi Paula

Are the lipsticks the foundations of these designs, or are they just ways of presenting different colors. It would be very interesting to see design ideas actually drawn from unrelated objects like the lipsticks.

  2. Hi Nicolette,

These were designs I selected that reflected the hues of the lipsticks - not the foundations of the designs. Sometimes clients show me a color and say, "I want this in my design. I love this color." The design can flow from the object itself - e.g. I had a beautiful pink rose shown to me that a client adored. I incorporated the color but took the style inspiration from the flower itself. The design was very feminine - as you can imagine. Or the design can flow from something I find that has the color represented in it. I often start with selecting a few fabrics that I believe the client will enjoy and have them live with them for a few days. The one they are drawn too the most is where my design takes off. But you want to know about unrelated objects - yes, ma'am, they happen every day. When I get back from vacation, I'll try to do a blog with actual examples. I have seen designs inspired by motorcycles, cars, animals, boats, dresses...... in one NSO Showhouse in DC, an inside swimming pool room was inspired by a Coco Chanel dress. I will try to find that - it was lovely. The message in this blog is to find inspiration it what ever moves you or a color that you love even if its found in a lipstick! Geez, how long winded can I be.....

  4. I just love your blog! This is a very fun and unusual angle with great rooms and inspiration. I feel inspired by the most odd things sometimes, such as the look of a store, or their branding, or even their ads. I can't wait to see your upcoming feature with additional examples.

Have a wonderful time with your daughter! :)

  6. Hi Paula

Yes, I know what you mean. Often the design on a particular theme can be done with totally unrelated objects. I remember when I used to work in this boutique, roses became the theme of the store during Valentine's week. The trouble is, if we start scattering rose pedals or start decorating with roses, it would actually be hard to manage. So I came up with the concept of using pink candles, pink ribbons, as well as some valentine's theme like a red heart shaped chocolate boxes. Of course, there were real roses, but they are placed in vases and labeled on sale. It worked out beautifully.
