Andy Skurman in the Round

I was perusing Architectural Digest.com as many of you do I'm sure when I came across the picture above. 'That looks like Andy Skurman's work,' I thought. I read the credits and sure enough, I was right! I love his round and curved rooms.

He worked with decorator Suzanne Tucker to accomplish the lovely work you'll see in the full article. I interviewed Andy a while back. He's very clear about his work, his niche, and I must say he does it well. I love his round dining rooms the most. Round dining tables I find to be so intimate and primed for conversation. That's why I also enjoy radial balance in rooms. Of course, that could just be the group therapist in me coming out!

A Peak in the Office

Remember I said in my last post that two of the blue/green silk panels were in my office? Well there they are. Jeff is installing photos of my work. Wow, my office is a mess! I did straighten it though. The bookcase I bought is too small. I'm going to move it to the basement. I'm in search of the perfect piece for my office now... always something!

You may recognize these drapes from my old house. I really like the way they compliment the mirrors above the bed. Those mirrors use to be in my old dining room. Its always fun to see where things land when you move. See the chests and lamps? They use to be in my living room. So pieces from three rooms ended up here in one of our guest rooms!

This is the second guest room. Love the blue! The drapes conveyed with the house. The previously homeowner made them. They were in the sitting room on the main level. There were actually six panels in this silk. Two are in my office; two are in this guest room; and two are in my assistant's home :)

This is the master bedroom sitting and dressing table area... large silk panels for extra yum!

And my daughter's room complete with wide black and white stripes, a fuchsia ceiling and drapes to tie it all together. The black and white portion of the drape was in my daughter's old room. Her windows then were in an alcove. We still loved the peace signs so all I did was add fuchsia silk to the bottom to lengthen and add a few more baubles. I love the way they turned out!

We still have to put the fuchsia paint splatter decals on the walls. All is good time... all in good time.

More Drapes at Home...

What about other rooms in the house?? Drapes went up in the living and dining rooms, and the room formerly known as the music room. I now call it the sitting room since there is no longer a baby grand piano in it. Above is the living room where Joe meticulously finishes the drapes.

Simply linen drape panels everywhere on this side of the house. Above in the sitting room...

and in the dining room. Here's a detail...

Instead of just leaving the drape panel inside the bay window, I brought it out. I did this to soften the corner and fill the negative space a bit more. I don't like something on every wall so the eye may rest in between interesting things. The walls that flank the bay are a bit too large to leave completely alone so bringing out the drape is just the ticket to soften and frame the window.

Up Goes the Family Room Drapes

As you may know in my neck of the woods two story prevails! My home is no different. We have a lovely large bay in the family room. I had drapes from my previous home that would work wonderfully in this room but I had to think of how to connect them with new drapes to soften the two story windows. See the detail border on the lead edge and bottom of each panel?
I had the same detail on the original drapes. However I did not want to have dark two story drapes so I chose silk very similar to the wall color. The detail border though is in the same silk as the border on the original and...
where the original and new drapes meet, the bottom border continues the line.
And that's how the old and new connect! That and the fact that they are both in neutral silks. Rolling, rolling, rolling...

Holiday Reminisce

I originally ran this post in December 2009. I was reminiscing with friends the other day about a Holiday Party we had in our old home. Here's how the house looked for that. I look forward to hosting Holiday parties in my new home but these photos make me appreciate my old home and remember all the wonderful times we had there :)

Welcome to my holiday home tour! These pictures are of the dramatic and touches of Christmas all over my house (double click on the pictures to see them larger). Above is the family room ~ home to my daughter's tree. Her tree is decorated with all her baby ornaments, ones made by her own hands, pictures of her and her daddy, candy canes, light and, of course, hot pink sparkly ball ornaments. Our stocking hang by the fire with care.....

Here we are in the dining room with red and silver sparkle ornaments hung from the chandelier with very fine plastic thread. It looks as if the bulbs are floating. A simple arrangement of red beaded branches and pine cones serve as centerpiece. When the table is set, it is a blaze with black, red, silver, and ivory ~ I need to have a dinner party!

Let's move to the living room......
My color palette in the living room is red and gold. My living room's year long palette is browns and blues so during the holiday season, I like to warm it up! All ornaments on the tree are red and gold. The ribbon is twisted to see both sides as they too are red and gold. An angel in a red dress is joined with gold beaded reindeer for the cocktail table display.

What's that peaking out of my cabinet? Red glass bulbs of course! I love little touches.

It is a simple crystal bowl that lives in the cabinet all year long. During the holidays, it is married with simple red bulbs for a pop of holiday cheer.

Here is a shot of my living room normally. This angle is almost where the Christmas tree stands. You can see the stairs and the balcony. During the Holidays the stairs and balcony are lined with nutcrackers, lit garland and red bows with gold specks. Sparkle, sparkle!!

For safety, I tie each nutcracker to the balusters with neutral twine that goes unnoticed.

Let's peak into the conservatory, which is an extension really of the living room as the French doors are always open between the two rooms. The palette in here ~ blue and ivory.

I love this wreath! I actually bought it for the front door but it did not fit between the door and the storm door ~ oh dear!! No matter, I found a lovely home for it hanging contently in the window. The conservatory is at the rear of the house so all one sees from the street is a little twinkle of light from the back window. I wrapped the wire for hanging in ivory and gold ribbon and voila ~ a beautiful decoration that began with an oops!

And now the kitchen.....
Just a touch ~ blue and gold bulbs suspended from the chandelier float above a blue and gold pedestal platter filled with pine cones. Blue napkins with gold rings set a top striped blue and neutral place mats finished with beads on the sides. I chose blue and gold to add warmth.

Don't forget the powder room!
Just a touch will do for me!

Inexpensive blue and silver jewelry-like ornaments hung from the sconces with a bow tied from silver tinsel pipe cleaners.

How about upstairs? I like a touch of holiday decor in each room of the house. In the master bedroom, we have these bulbs on an accent table.....
We bought these bulbs on our honeymoon so it makes them extra special and wonderful to place in our personal space. When the candle is lit, the gold paint on each bulbs glistens.

What about Lauren's room???
Of course! It is decorated with a door wreath and red bows.... everywhere! Her own design!

I love Christmas with all the beauty the season has to offer ~ spending time with loved ones. This year, I am hosting Christmas for the first time. I cannot wait to have a house full, constant chaos and laughter. Lauren is so excited to have her Nana and cousins here. I wonder if she'll sleep at all of Christmas eve?! I know for sure that she won't let her older cousins sleep in on Christmas day. I cannot wait to see her face that morning. That will be the best beaming light of all!

This ceiling is in the library of the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC. I went there the other day to meet Christian Herrmann, a stone artist from Pennsylvania. Christian belongs to the sister club in NY; he stays in this club when visiting DC. He gave me a tour.

I could have snapped pictures of the entire place as the architecture is beautiful but I thought that would be rude. However, when I saw this coffer ceiling, I had to take a few shots. I love the details. I have clients I'll have to show this too. They would appreciate it so much. I love the pattern of the beams... everything about it. It's not the simple square pattern seen so often. Inspiration is everywhere. EVERYWHERE!

The other day I decided that I would fill some silver vases I have with gold sticks and red shimmering berries for a bit of holiday cheer. I had the shimmering red berries but I needed the gold sticks. So off I went to my local crafts store. No gold stick that I liked. Next, my local home decor store. Yup, they had them. Nice and chunky just the way I wanted them. They wanted $12.99 for three short sticks. $12.99 plus tax! Blimey!

I needed many sticks for what I had in mind. I thought to myself, 'There's no way I am paying that.' So back I went to my crafts store. This time to buy a can of gold spray paint. Monday morning I went into the woods just behind my home. We had a good night below freezing so I thought now is the time for me to make my move. I gathered up some lovely fallen sticks and branches and went to work.

Here are my vases with my DIY gold sticks. I didn't want them to be perfect. I wanted a little bit of the wood to show through. I managed to get it just the way I wanted.

Here they are with my little men. I'm still waiting for the pedestals I ordered. The vases will be placed on top of them. They are arriving soon!

I love my little nutcrackers on my steps. I've done that for years and I smile every time they make their entrance.

Not to shabby for a novice craft DIYer. Nice and chunky... just the way I wanted them.

Shape and Rhythm Details

You've heard time and time again... Its all in the details. I agree. We've been looking at some before and during pictures of a project and then some of the details. Today's detail is about shape and rhythm ~ two elements I pay very close attention to when I design.

In the detail picture above are the table, chairs, and chandelier I selected for the kitchen. First, the chandelier and table base have contemporary lines and finished in chrome ~ a nice connection. To warm it up and mix materials and periods, I used reproduction 19th century Parisian brasserie wooden chairs. To connect the great divide in material and periods, I echoed a shape. Note the soft V-like shape of the chandelier arms and the back of the chair. The eye is drawn to the shape connection adding a lovely vertical rhythm. I love that.

Sweet Details

This grand piece is in the family room portion of the great room I have been telling you about. I showed you a beautiful detail in my last post and now I will show you a sweet detail. As you can see this media cabinet that I designed follows the contour of the stairs and enables a great amount of storage and display. Let's take a closer look...

Here is the contents of the left cabinet next to the television. Do you recognize them? These are another Cyan Design find ~ the game pieces from Monopoly ~ a game that my client enjoyed playing with her family while growing up. She has many fond memories of those times.

I love the antique silver finish against the dark walnut wood. I also love that she smiles every time she looks at them. That is the best part of all!

A Day Made of Glass

Beautiful Details

On Monday I showed you a wide angle shot of this project. Here is a detail shot. You may already know this about me but I love using glass... art glass, glass tile..... I am always mesmerized but the play between light and glass. This leads me to state for the record ~ lighting is critical for great design. You can see I used glass tile that captures the palette. These are illuminated by under cabinet lighting. In this design, I also have lit top cabinets along the entire perimeter of this kitchen. Of course, the shelves in these cabinets are a bit too high for daily functional use but functional use is not why they are there. I designed these cabinets to hold a two art glass series that I love from Cyan Design. They are not terribly expensive ~ GREAT! They are, however, very impactful.

When these glass pieces are illuminated, they are spectacular. The entire perimeter of the kitchen glows with champagne and soft green. Hmmm.... maybe I should take a picture of them in the evening (duh!). Next time :)

Mini BUT Impactful Before and After

Do you remember this photo? I blogged about it before. My lovely client, the gentleman of the house, did this faux treatment himself. I tried not to wince but when the lady of the house winced rather loudly, I had to join in. He is a very skillful man. He can install practically anything. He was the project manager of this job AND he knew what he is doing. Fantastic attributes to have. Unfortunately faux painting is not on his long list of skills. The lady of the house asked me to "Please take care of this powder room as soon as possible." Ok!
There you go. All better. It is amazing to me how a simple coat of paint can calm. I changed out the lighting, mirror, vanity, area rug, and, of course, added art. Viola! Better yes?

I am very excited to announce that I've been invited to participate in an upcoming book publication. The picture above is of the Southeast regions version. It is a beautiful coffee table book showcasing wonderful interior designers. The Panache Company publishes regional books. They scour the country looking at designer's work and then inviting them to be a part of it. My book comes out this summer. You'll be able to purchase it on Amazon or at Barnes & Noble.

This past Friday, I had a photo shoot at one of my client's homes. It was an unusual shoot because the finished product is a 360 degrees view of several rooms in the home. This view will be available online in conjunction with the book. It is very cool! I'll share the link once it is up.

Of course, I'll be having a give~away of one of the books when it is available but I wanted to give you a sneak peak...

Let's start at the beginning... the entry. I took this picture above standing in my foyer looking into the music room. Those are my favorite wedding pictures. Candid shots of Jim and I dancing and of us with our bridal party ~ laughing. I love that one. These are front and center on a column as you walk in the front door. The shot below is what you saw when you look up at the second floor hall from the foyer.

Before the art was installed.

Here is is with the artwork. You may notice a theme with almost all of the artwork in my home. Can you see the theme? There will be some exceptions.

Above is my art installer's ladder complete with tools. He just keeps moving it around to the area he's working rather than carry a tool chest. One never knows when the ladder will come in handy.

While were upstairs, let's peek into one of the guest rooms. Above is the room minus any wall adornment.

I used the mirrors I had in my dining room in my old house here. They will have a strong connection with the drapes which have a circular star-like motif on them. I cannot wait to get those up. The two together will bring a wonderful rhythm to the space. I love that!

Here is the back second floor hall that over looks the family room. This art has been waiting a while to be hung.

Isn't she a beauty??! This is an amazing John Richard mirror 96" tall and 48" wide. I ordered it but it will not be in until the end of December :-( I did visit it when I was a Market though :-)

A blank wall! BUT...........

I commissioned an artist to paint a trip tyke for me. I am looking forward to seeing the drawings and seeing them come to life. Each will not be quite that wide. I think they need to be slightly thinner. I am leaving the tape up to remind me of what's to come. As soon as they arrive I will show you and tell you all about the wonderful artist. That will be a happy day!

"It Ain't Nothin' but a Thing"

I have a wonderful team. My installers, Jeff and Joe, like to keep things simple. Here is a project I'm working on that had a dilemma. You see in my neck of the woods, we have many, MANY two story whatever... family rooms, foyers... you name it, we have it in a two story version.

Two story installation of drapes is not for the faint of heart. Trust me ~ it can be a bit scary. I am not afraid of heights. Heck I have parachuted before. But sometimes when way up high on a ladder, one may need to stretch to reach what's needed.. or sneeze... or have the ladder start to slip a little. At least when I jumped out of the plane, I knew the parachute would open and I wouldn't crash to the ground. That is not the case here. So up they go. I still say a prayer every time.

Then the magic happens and I appreciate their efforts so much. But what if a designer is faced with two story almost everywhere in a room. Here's the situation... the window to the left of the fireplace is partially over a landing of the stairs. One of my installers, Joe, has a saying..."It ain't nothin' but a thing." And he's right. If the room demands silk from head to toe ~ you give it to it freely, without reservation or complications.

Even if the ladder needs to be placed in an unconventional manner, you smile at the sight of it and marvel at the effect.

Once the room is completely furnished in all its splendor, the quirk will disappear and all that will be left is enjoyment. See... it ain't nothin' but a thing :-)

Byron Jorjorian Michigan Trip

I can almost smell the fresh air. I interviewed Byron for my blog a while ago and have featured him before because I have always loved his work. This is the view from my back door. I grew up is Rochester, NY so I am VERY familiar with snow even in October. Now I am in Northern Virginia and this seems quite surreal to me. All I can say is SNOWBALL FIGHT!!

I had a wonderful and successful time at High Point Market. From the fantastic Hickory Chair 100th Year Anniversary Party to finding the right treasures for my clients to seeing old friends and spending time with my dear friend, Paula (the other Paula). It was just the rejuvenation I needed.

As you may know, I was also looking for my new home. I felt so inspired and things were just clicking for me. I saw these at Halo Style ~ they made me very happy! I had not thought about something like these for my home but when I saw them. I fell in love. And love it such a wonderful feeling :-)

What's on the Walls Paula Grace?!

The one thing that Jim and I wanted was to get our art and photos up. The bare walls were making me crazy! We started that process in the family room ~ where we spend much of our time together.

I placed the triptych from our last home's living room above the mantel. I like them there. The fireplace screen is being made and the drapes have to be hung and the side table that my friend Andie is painting needs to placed.... all in good time!

We love our family photos. I configured this arrangement combining three from our last home. It seems like an ode to Lauren. Wait, there's more...

Those are all Lauren below. Ok, so the room is a bit of a shrine to her but that's the way it is in our family. Lauren is the center of everything. In this photo, I particularly like the truck outside the window ~ nice (not)! Where are those drapes?! They are actually hanging in my closet upstairs but the hardware has yet to arrive. Soon, soon.

Oh yeah, like the dogs playing patty cake?! Those are book ends. Do you see any books? Some day everything will be in its place. Hopefully it will happen before I get to old and forget where everything is!

More art will be hung soon. For now, it is at least some of it is placed where it will live.

My New Home... Onward!

My dear friend, Andie, who's artistry will appear in my home, convinced me to show my home in process. She said "the wallpaper inspired me to something to my home." I'm all for inspiration! As you may know, I painted the entire house before we moved in. The wallpaper went up in the first week. Where did it go? On the ceiling of course.

I used a Candice Olson wallcovering from York. The metallic background is a silvery blue. The textured motif is real sand. I placed it is the cathedral ceiling in the music room...

It looks dark in the first picture but it isn't really. I also placed it in the dining room tray ceiling...

The ceiling color is Brittany Blue by Benjamin Moore. I love the softness of it all. The metallic and sand shimmer when light hits it. I am so looking forward to the drapes being installed ~ that is happening very soon ~ YAY!. That will make it even cozier. Fabric adds so much. I opted for linen drapes in these rooms one shade darker than the White Chocolate walls.

I am off to High Point Market shortly. I adore going to Market when one of the people I am hunting treasure for is me!

Defrizz Hair Cocktail & Pete

Today I'm going to share a secret with you. I am completely gray. It's true. I started going gray when I was 22 years old thanks to genetics ~ dear ol' dad. I also got an analytical mind from him so its not all bad. I have friends who have that silky gray hair and have it completely natural. I envy them. I have the kinky, frizzy kind. Those that have it know exactly what I am talking about. It is not as bad as what is shown above... but pretty darn close. I color mine back to my natural color ~ the same color as my daughter's hair.

You can see in the picture above that is was before I discovered the miracle potion. With the invention of hair products that continually improve, I have perfected the defrizz hair cocktail. Seriously, I have. I have tried numerous products and several cocktails until I got it just right. Are you ready?!

This is an exaggeration! If you have wavy hair, your hair will remain wavy just not frizzy. I have wavy hair.

Now the proportion of product is important too. Products are always telling you to use about the size of a dime. I can safely say, a dime will never cut it on this hair of mine. I started off using the recommended amounts only to have my hair laugh at me ~ which is never fun. Here's the potion...

Use the size of a large nickle or small quarter ~ equal parts of the Lanza and Bumble and Bumble Styling Lotion to fill one large nickel and then add a full nickel's worth of the Bumble and Bumble Defrizz. My hair is just below my shoulders so if you have shorter or longer hair, the amount of potion you'll need may vary. Rub all the ingredients together in your hands and then apply to ends first then work your way up to the scalp. Comb through and style. DO NOT USE A HAIR DRYER AT ALL. Let your hair dry naturally. Once your hair is dry or at least almost dry (the dryer the better), comb with a large wide tooth comb or your fingers. DO NOT BRUSH IT. It is true you will have a wet head look for a period in the morning but it doesn't look to bad. I go to my BNI at 7:30 in the morning. They have never seen me with dry hair unless I have lunch or dinner with a member.

My hair is so much healthier than when I was trying to blow it out straight AND the cocktail makes my hair soooo soft.

There you have it. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

On another note ~ many of you know I am a music lover and inspired by it all the time. I just heard that one of my all time favorite musicians/song writers has been nominated to the Song Writing Hall of Fame. He and his band, The Who, are already in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but Pete Townshend has been nominated for the honor of Song Writer's Hall of Fame.

I say ABSO... FREAKIN'.... LUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why?

I love crystal. I grew up admiring my mom's Waterford crystal collection. She had pieces all over the living room. I have the collection now and have added to it. What I love most about crystal is, like a diamond, it captures the light...

and bounces it all over the room. Take a look...

These finials will adorn my living room... once I finally the rest of the hardware and drapes are ready. But for now, I'll just play with them in the light.

I'm sure I am not the only one guilty of admiring my engagement ring when it rests atop the steering wheel with the sun bounces off of it. That gives my joy. I don't do that as much now as when I first received it but every once in a while, it catches the light and my eye just so and I feel happy.

Just the Right Piece

Have you ever looked long and hard for that perfect piece? I have. I'm hoping I can spare some of you the trouble of finding a perfect end or table lamp. I'm going to share three of my favorites.

This first one is from John Richard. This is a beautiful little number called the Drake Side Table. Elegant and traditional but easily placed in a transitional or contemporary application where a nod to the past will be appreciated and provide the lovely diversity that each design craves.

The next one is from Hickory Chair. The East Paces Side Table designed by Suzanne Kasler.

I adore the fluidity of the legs. The beauty with this piece is that the finish is customizable. It can be rich and deep or light and airy making it one of the most versatile side/lamp table I have found.

Metal more your thing? How about this number?

These are the Marcel from Worlds Away. Again, the fluidity of the legs is so graceful. Sadly, I have to say the Marcel has been discontinued (boo hoo!) but they still have a limited supply. I have three of these in my home; two as night stands and one with a chess set placed upon it in between two chairs. Lauren and I play chess there. I'm glad I have them. They also are front and center in one of my favorite design projects...

Hmmm?!! I may need to buy some of their limited supply and keep them in inventory ~ I love them that much!

A Candice Olson design from York Wallcoverings. I love the way it looks! The ceilings in the rooms with this wallpaper are painted in the Brittany Blue. It really is pretty. They go nicely with my existing chandeliers.

Both from Fine Art Lamps. The chandeliers that conveyed with the house are beautiful and good quality but they are just not my style.

I'm hesitant to show pictures of the rooms at this point because they seem so far from finished. I'm going to Market later this month. My plan is to finish them further. Maybe then. Unless you really want to see it from beginning to end (gulp!), I'll show them to you.

A Visual Comfort beauty.

Now I am in the process selecting chairs for the music room (it had a grand piano in it before so it will forever be known as the music room), selecting and designing fabrics, finding the just right counter stools, a new console table... and pieces for my foyer. I think I found the table but I am designing the chest. That is always the fun part for me... designing my own pieces.

My window treatments are either up (woven shades) or being fabricated as I type (drapes). The hardware should be here... hmmmm??? I wonder where it is??!! I feel a phone call coming on.

Details, details......

I DO have a grand plan though, which intimately involves Paula Grace Designs, Inc.

A Fall Day in Rochester

This weekend, we took a whirlwind trip to Upstate New York ~ Rochester to be exact. We had relatives coming in for an overnight visit from Chile, where my mom is from. The entire ride up and back were breathtaking foliage scenes.

On Saturday, the weather was gorgeous. We spent most of the time with my family. Lauren enjoyed riding the go-carts with her cousins...

and feeding the pigeons at Schoen Place.

I enjoyed seeing my family even though it was a brief trip... and I always enjoy seeing Lauren having a carefree skip in the park. A happy lark just taking in the scenery and sunshine.

Did the adults play too?
Of course! I'm pretty sure Jim won that race. I raced too. I did not win... but I sure had a lot of fun trying to :-)

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure ~ An Experience of a Lifetime

I have had to take a couple of days to reflect on this experience. It was an emotional roller coaster. From the moment we arrived at Nationals Stadium, one thing was clear ~ this is an important, life altering event. We, meaning my Team ~ Tara, Pam, honorary member Johanna, me, Holly, and Miona, were enveloped by people all there for one common purpose ~ to find a cure for breast cancer. There were breast cancer survivors, family members, friends, concerned people from all walks of life were there for one thing.

There was the ‘message’ board where people wrote who they were there for ~ loved ones that survived, were trying to survive, or those taken by this disease. The opening ceremony was moving.
Banners were carried conveying all things that people deserved to have ~ hopes, dreams, beliefs…. Survivors took the stage bonded with hands held high displaying stamina and promoting hope. The master of ceremony at one point asked the crowd members to shout out who they were there for. Many shouted out names. One stood out ~ a little girl shouted “For Mommy!” It was difficult for me to maintain composure but another thing was clear as day ~ if one felt moved to tears then cry ‘because if we cannot cry here together, where else can we?’ So I did, many times.
Then it was time to start the walk. As we made our way through the bottleneck, high fives were everywhere from supportive strangers encouraging and thanking the walkers.

And we walked and walked and walked… in the rain. We walked all over DC. We walked through gorgeous neighbors where we admired the architecture. We took pictures. We walked by many Starbucks and took refuge in a few to grab something warm or dry off even for a few minutes. The Komen folks are organized. There were planned breaks every couple of miles or so with snacks, hydration, and medical attention if needed. All of those planned breaks were outside, in the rain.
Lunch was outside, in the rain. We laughed as how our lunch bags were disintegrating and our sandwiches were soggy. There we took refuge in a port-o-potty. Yes, a port-o-potty. Sound strange? Well yes but it was a bit of warmth and bit of dryness. Then we trekked on. It’s funny how you get to know people in a different way when walking and talking. Discussions ran deep. All along we never lost site of why we were there ~ to find a cure. We met so many people affected by this disease. Marshall stands out. He was a member of the crew. He is VERY involved with the Komen Organization. He was everywhere. Marshall lost three sisters to breast cancer ~ THREE.
There were women of all ages and the most masculine men wearing pink tutus all along the way. That was the crew outfit. There were crowds cheering wearing customs of pink and balloon breasts. There was a little girl with a cowboy hat doing the hula hoop. She kept popping up at different places on the walk. Just supporting the whole thing?? I don’t want to imagine why… her mom, her sister……???
We all made it. We were drenched to the bone. We could all squeeze water from of gym gear designed to dry quickly… under normal circumstances. We reached our final destination for the day and climbed onto the warm, dry bus with comfortable cushions seats. I think I feel asleep for a few minutes. We pulled into camp.

Camp was a series of stations ~ port-o-potties, shower trucks, the ‘mall’, the food tent, the medical tent, and a sea of luggage to claim and boxes of hot pick tents. We gathered our water logged luggage, was given a tent, and a spot to call home ~ temporarily. That was interesting ~ setting up tent in the rain, trying to keep the inside as dry as possible to place the gear so we could go eat a good meal. The food was good. I ate more than usual but then I probably used more calories that day then I had in a long time. How could you not shower first you ask?? The Komen folks know their stuff. They drilled into us eat first, shower second. Why? Didn’t want anyone to pass out in the hot shower. After we made the commitment to stay in camp (versus go home and sleep or to a hotel), we took our showers and started to peruse the mall. We could shop, get a foot and back massage via a chair, or just hang out. I can tell you that after a full day of rain, mud was a hurdle to overcome just like the distance we walked that day. Next came sleep.
I didn’t sleep well. Luckily the rain had stopped. Still, too many sounds, too hot, too cold…. I didn’t sleep. At 5:16 AM I decided to get up and get ready for the next day of walking.
This was a different day on many levels. The rain had stopped and the predicted rain wasn’t going to happen ~ YAY! The path that day took us up and down long hills and angled driveways. My feet were really beginning to hurt particularly my left foot. Still we trekked on. There were signs for me when I should have raised and crossed my arms above my head ~ the signal that you needed a ride or help ~ but I didn’t. I wanted to continue. It mattered so much.
We walked down a particularly long angled hill. I made it down and thought I can do anything if I can do that. We walked a little further to lunch. Another hill to walk down. By now my foot was aching. Another small steep hill to get down. Pain. Sharp pain. I knew this feeling. I had had it before. I told myself ‘I’ll just get my lunch, sit down, rest as long as I can and get up and walk the remaining seven miles for the day. Only seven miles, surely I can do that.’ I sat down with my Team on the ground. Pain. I took out my sunglasses and out them on. It was out of place. It wasn’t sunny. No one else had sunglasses on. My teammate even joked about it and snapped a picture “Hey look at Tom Cruise Top Gun.” I laughed. It was funny. My sunglasses were to hide my tears and probably my shame.
I knew I wasn’t going to be able to walk anymore. I had touched the top of my foot and bit my lips. A stress fracture. I was quiet throughout lunch. It was the most surreal experience I have ever had ~ listening to the conversation, looking around, trying to not let on. Why? I am on a Team. A Team all tired but full of drive and anticipation to get to the finish line that day. It was the longest walk of the three days and I was not going to derail them. I noticed one of my folks looking behind me so I turned to see what they were looking at. They were looking at an amputee trying to get up with his fiancee helping him. How awesome is he?!! I felt small.
At the end of lunch, I smiled and told me Team I needed to go back to camp. That if I walked the rest of today, I wouldn’t be able to walk tomorrow. I already knew I wasn’t going to be able to walk tomorrow. I cheered them on. Said good-bye and walked slowly to the bus as they continued their journey.
Back at camp I sat for a long while thinking about things ~ looking all around me and seeing the Remembrance Tent off in the distance ~ all the pain and hope that brings people together for a common goal. I wanted to be part of that. To walk the walk.
Then I thought about my daughter, my glorious daughter, and how I needed to stay healthy. I called my husband. “You need to come get me,” I said. Not one word of judgment, just “I’ll be there as soon as I can honey.” He was caring for not only our daughter but two other daughters of Team members as their husbands were off on the Cub Scout camping trip with their sons. Jim and I only have Lauren. Jim gave up the Club Golf Championship Tournament to care for all the girls overnight.
When Pam, out Team Captain, first asked me to do this, I said, “Absolutely!” Jim said, “What about your foot honey?” I said, “I can do it!” “Ok,” he said. You see, if you don’t already know, I have a bum foot. I, like millions of others, was born with flat feet. Not that big of a deal. When I was about 10, I had an accident where I basically ripped everything apart that holds the foot together. At that time, in the dark ages, they didn’t set or cast injuries like that. So it didn’t heal properly. Over the course of life, everything weakened and the bones are not where they are supposed to be making it predisposed to injury similar to degenerative bone disease. It sucks, no doubt, but nothing, NOTHING compared to the amputee. My Teammate, Holly, researched the couple. He ended up in the hospital on Saturday with an infection and she walked alone on Sunday carrying his prosthetic leg. Amazing! They met on the first day of the Komen Walk last year. They got engaged the first day of this Komen Walk. Spectacular!

Jim came and picked me up with all the girls in tow. We found their moms on the walk and tears of joy were had all around. That was the first time they knew I was going home. At least they had a little joy with seeing their daughters. When I got home, I lost it. I cried uncontrollably while Jim and Lauren held me and told me how proud they were.

I showered, braced my foot, and took medicine.

The next day I explained to all the girls just what happened as they were confused. I worked with the girls to make signs to hold up as their moms came close to the finish line. My husband had washed my Belmont Babes Team shirt so I could wear it to walk across the finish line with my Team. I did that with my Teammate Tara (who called in a friend to help her walk the last six miles), her son (who is on crutches), my daughter (who has a cast on her arm), and me with my big brace on the ankle and foot. We were a sight to see. The crowds cheered for us.
In the end, I didn’t walk the full 60 miles but my Team and I raised close to $14,000 for help find a cure. We experienced the camaraderie of a lifetime for a cause like no other. It was amazing. BFF ~ ‘Breast Friends Forever’ was the statement coined by Holly for her Teammates. Cleverly perfect.
Would I ever do the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure again ~ you betcha!!! ~ as a member of the crew. I already researched where to get a stunning pink tutu.

The Right Mat for Your Artwork

Selling Your Home Well

I decided to write about selling one’s home since we just did that. We didn’t move far ~ two streets away from my previous home. I have staged homes before for selling purposes but I have never looked for a home or sold one before; we built our home in Northern Virginia and before that, I rented. It was quite an eye opening experience to go through this process. You know I am an interior designer so my home looked pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. Friends kept telling us that it would go fast but I was still nervous given the market. Our home sold in two days. What did my house sell for? The asking price.

There are many homes for sale these days. Some sell quickly, others, not so. Why? I know of one home that was on the market for only one day. I saw that house before it went up. It was beautiful; more on that later.

Let’s focus on this from a couple of perspectives. First, I interviewed two very well known and respected Realtors that work (and live) in Northern Virginia. Realtors with experience and know the area and target market are the ones you want to work with ~ hands down. These two are just that. Your Realtor networking with other Realtors is the number one way a home gets sold, not open houses. Diane Boone spoke about curb appeal, the home being immaculate and well maintained, and to remove any clutter. Greg Wells spoke about it very similarly ~ he even told me to declutter MY home! I couldn’t agree more. Greg and Diane gave loads of wonderful advice. I will give it all to you at the end of the post ~ its worth the wait.

When I was looking at homes to purchase, I was surprised. We saw many homes that were in stages of disrepair. All I could think about was if something so blatant was broken on the outside, what hidden disasters are waiting inside, perhaps in the walls or in the pipes. I saw broken shutters, steps, doors, windows…. I saw dirty dishes in the sink, clothes left on the floor…. I know we really live like this but I think there is a deeper psychological component to it when you see these things in a house on the market. “Well loved” was one expression Jim and I penned when looking at and placing homes into categories; only the “well loved” homes were the ones we considered. What does that mean? It means homes where pride was obvious, a happy home, a home considerate of the occupants and guests, a well thought through home. Diane and Greg called this “immaculate, well maintained, bright, fresh looking, furniture placed in ways to promote traffic flow….” Yes, yes, yes.

Greg and Diane also said that sellers need to look at their home objectively and know the target market. Absolutely. I say take it one step further and think of the psychology of the potential buyer. People want to see themselves in a well done home, living a happy, healthy life with their family; a home that shows success. I am sure many of you have read books or articles on dressing for success. One needs to dress their home for success when it is on the market.

Those in my field and related fields know about presenting a life style to potential clients that they would like to portrait in their home. Usually residential interior designers aren't hired to simply arrange furniture. We're hired to deliver a finished design that conveys the owners' sense of self, their style, their success. An atmosphere that portraits their life style.

I bolded life style and success because of their importance, their relevance to the topic of selling one's home. In a manner of speaking, when selling a home, one is also selling a life style and the demonstration of success, which are profound concepts to grasp when objectively looking at your home. What life style does your home convey? Does it demonstrate success?

A caveat ~ I am not using life style and success as synonyms for wealthy. They are not one in the same. They are often equated with each other but they are NOT the same when we speaking about this topic. People, for the most part, look for a home within their means. So, in this context, size really doesn't matter. A nice life style and success are universal desires. Creativity is not an attibute only found in the rich and famous. And creativity is really the driving force behind style and success.

Here are some things to consider. If a home presents with any amount of disrepair, it will be noticed and experienced as much larger than a simple broken shutter.

Disrepair presents the home as being unhealthy and unhappy. Parents don’t want to raise their children in that environment. Well done doesn’t mean professionally designed. Northern Virginia, where I live, is known as a more traditional area in style. I think this is changing. I see (and do) much more transitional and contemporary in the area now. The point here is whatever the style you enjoy, make sure it is identifiable and stick to that style. If you have traditional furnishings and very contemporary light fixtures, incongruence is taking place. In general, people like things to be congruent, to make sense, to be harmonious. When incongruence is experienced, it is disturbing to the heart and mind. No one wants to live in a home that disturbs them. They may not know what exactly it is that is bothering them, but they will feel it and leave the house with that as their experience. I am not saying eclectic doesn’t sell ~ it just has to be done in a manner that makes sense.

The house that sold in one day I spoke about earlier was traditional in style (not my style) BUT it was done well and I appreciated that. It was immaculate and clearly the owners took pride in the way they lived. The home conveyed success in many regards. It was a very thoughtful house meaning consideration was put into every aspect of the house and it was obvious. If that house had all that we were looking for in terms of space, we would have purchased it. The house we did purchase was similar ~ a home that when built and the work done afterwards was very thoughtful ~ every aspect considered.

If this is not in your personality or a natural attribute, no worries, staging can help with this. You’d be surprised what changing out some art, area rugs, or light fixtures can accomplish. These can be done in a cost efficient manner. I’m not talking about adding personality. I’m speaking about adding the appearance of harmony, pride, happiness, health, style, success ~ all things humans crave…. especially in their home.

Now for the thoughtful advice from Diane and Greg. I gave Greg and Diane specifics questions to answer. They did a great job. Their recommendations are the foundation. My advice is the finesse. Combine the two and the results will amaze you.

A) Top 5 things:
1) Curb appeal: Look at your home from the street, hire landscaping professionals to trim and
and correct and don't forget to fix that crack in the driveway!
2) Have an immaculate entry: Fresh flowers, painted front door and polished or replaced hardware.
3) Make sure your home looks well maintained, throughout...Cracks in the walls, wood work, faded floors, fresh paint...all must be considered a basic requirement for improvement or replacement, before going on the market.
4) Carpets must be clean and fresh looking and can not look worn or else they should be replaced.
5) De-clutter...everywhere!

B) Common Mistakes:

1) The biggest mistake people make is not realizing that they must look objectively and unemotionally at their home...which is very difficult for most people to do. They can no longer look at it as "their" home, but, rather, as a product to be marketed and sold.
2) Be aware of what you can and cannot change about your home. Decorate for your target audience. This knowledge will allow you to concentrate on those items that will bring the highest rewards and will assist in getting you under contract in the shortest period of time. Ask your agent to suggest a professional stager assist you in getting your home market ready.
3) Going out on the market priced too high rather than being the best home out there, for the dollar. Money and value does matter, especially in today's market.
4) Don't go on the market if you are not ready...Activity in the first 2 weeks on the market is the highest and if you are not ready, you will loose valuable exposure to agents that won't come back a second time.
5) Don't let an agent "buy" the listing...Educate yourself, so you know, honestly, what the values are for a home like yours, before you go on the market. Just because someone "says" your home is worth more, doesn't mean it will sell for that number. The market drives the price of the home, not the Realtor or the owner.

C) Best Staging Tips:

1) Brighter Lighting/Slowly Moving Ceiling Fans and Strategic use of Art Work can open up a space.
2) Make sure that furniture placement enhances the room and does not impede traffic flow.
3) Replace builder grade light fixtures with new lighting, in proportion to the value of the home.
4) Open your outdoor umbrellas and set up your deck furniture so that it is inviting.
5) Open blinds and let the outside in...especially if you have a great lot!

D) Pros & Cons to working with a Realtor:

There are no cons to working with a Realtor, as long as that Realtor is a well-educated, respected professional that knows your area. A good Realtor can not only simplify the process for you and potentially, save you thousands of dollars, then if you were to try to do this alone, but, will also assist you with every aspect of the transaction, from start to finish. The "business" of Real Estate is a lot more complicated than it appears and the legal exposure can cost an untrained seller much more than a Realtor's commission in delays and law suits. Statistically, homes listed by Real Estate professional sell for significantly higher prices than those sold without a Realtor. At the end, you get what you pay for!

E) Attributes to look for when selecting a Realtor:

1) Knowledge of your community and surrounding community.
2) Proven success in both up and down markets.
3) Communicative and available to you when questions or concerns arise.
4) Will you have regular access to the agent you signed your listing contract with?
5) It's not just about who charges the least commission...it's about the quality of the marketing, networking and online presence. Cutting commission often means having to cut out some of those services that are important to you in today's market.

Lastly and most important...there are many capable Realtor's out there that can get the job done for you. This is a business where personality and style compatibility does matter. The listing and purchasing of your home is, potentially, the most important purchase you will ever make. You should feel that you have a partnership with and can communicate to your Realtor, throughout the transaction.

1. Top 5 things:

a) Street Presence: The home needs to excite the prospective purchaser from the moment they arrive. The grass needs to be cut, the planting beds need to be edged and freshly mulched, the shrubs should be pruned and flowers should be planted to add color. The driveway should be sealed if necessary. The mailbox should have a fresh coat of paint and look as if it were brand new. Concrete lead walks and stoops should be power washed or painted to add an even cleaner look. Replacing exterior light fixtures can also give the home an updated look.
b) The Entry should continue the excitement and continue to portray clean and updated. Painting or staining the front door, replacing old door hardware and kick plates is usually necessary. Once inside the foyer light fixture is the first place a purchaser will look and form an opinion so out with the original builder fixture and in with an appropriate fixture with current finish that appeals to all.
c) Maintenance must be taken care of throughout. The walls need to be clean and sometimes repainted. Be sure to take care of any drywall cracks or nail pops. Have carpets, windows and the entire home professionally cleaned.
d) Staging to maximize space, appeal to the masses and to neutralize the pallet gives most homes the best chance for success. De-Clutter and take excess to off site storage, don't load up your storage room. It needs to look spacious and this is accomplished by having a minimal amount of things and neatly stacked against the wall.
e) Rear Exterior needs to have the same wow factor as the front.

2. Common mistakes:

a) The biggest mistake is not listening to all the professional advice give by a real estate professional or stager. It doesn't matter how many hours you've logged watching HGTV, you can never be objective in your own home.
b) Incorrect pricing is always a problem and usually sets a home in a position where it will get less in the long run than if it were priced correctly to begin.
c) Preparing the home for a showing is critical. Lights need to be on, blinds and drapes open, light music playing and if applicable home theater should be running with something appealing to all ages like an animated movie. Pleasing but not overpowering scents should be used as well.
d) Get out of the home for showings.
e) Choosing the wrong agent. This is a business decision and you need to chose an agent that has a proven track record, top quality marketing and a marketing budget to give you maximum exposure.

3. Best staging tips:

a) De-Clutter everywhere.
b) Neutralize the painting, fabrics and bedspreads
c) Update and coordinate fixtures and hardware throughout.
d) Stage the inside and outside of the home.
e) Be prepared at all times (24/7)

4. Pros and Cons of working with a Realtor:

Selling a home and getting it through all of the steps of the process needs to be done by a professional. There are over 100 steps in the process and unless you have done this for years you are asking for trouble.

5. Attributes to look for when selecting a Realtor:

a) Experience, number of transactions and success rate including average days on the market and percentage of sales price to list price.
b) Local knowledge of your community and communities that compete with yours.
c) Team vs Individual. A well run team can handle more business and more efficiently than an individual. Make sure you know who is on the team, what they do to support you and how and who you will interact with.
d) Marketing, what is the quality of their photography, brochures and marketing. Where do they market and do they have the budget to provide you with maximum exposure.
e) Honesty, are the telling you the truth or what they think you want to hear.

Paint Palette

I was fortunate to be able to rent my new home for two weeks prior to closing. The entire house was painted. I essentially used four colors in the home, except for my daughter's space. That is another story. I decided to lighten the palette compared to my last home. Here's what I used...

White Chocolate, Brittany Blue, Sandy White, and Shaker Beige ~ all from Benjamin Moore. I love the palette ~ soft and soothing. Of course I do have one accent color on my coffer ceiling in the family room...

Plymouth Brown again from Ben Moore.

I have off white glazed cabinets in my kitchen. The Sandy White on the walls in the family room relatively echo the color and well connect the two room. The kitchen is in the Brittany Blue.

You can see the Plymouth Brown peeking out at the top of the family room picture. I love the way it looks and feels.

White Chocolate is in the living, dining, and music room as well as my office.

The ceiling however in the living and dining room are in Brittany Blue. The tray ceiling in the dining room and cathedral ceiling in the music room have a lovely wallpaper with details in sand ~ literally ~ sand.

Shaker Beige, a paint color I use often, made it's way into the master bedroom, one guest room, and the lower level.

Brittany blue is in the second guest room.

The rooms are no longer empty at this point but I haven't taken any additional pictures yet.

What about Lauren's space? I'll save that for another post. Let's just say her colors deviate greatly from the master plan. She designed it all on her own. Stay tuned.

Moving Day

We've moved! The perspective on moving day is one I will never forget. All the TLC given to our old home over many years carried off and placed in a truck. Here's my eyes on moving day...

The saving grace it that is was all moved to our new home. Almost everything has found a new place. I'll chronicle that over the next few weeks. We did have three casualties ~ two are easily fixed. One cannot be fixed. The piece has to be replaced. I was heartbroken over it too. It was one of the chest flanking the bed in my master bedroom. I remember the day I found those chests ~ pricey but perfect. They are still available ~ phew!

The room with the green ceiling was a tough room to shoot but it was well worth the tinkering. Here are some shots of Bob at work...

My assistant, Natalie, and I was doing the usual tinkering in the form of staging. Much of the time, I was doing this...

But the one who stole center stage was neither Bob, Natalie, or I; it was the feline...

She found her spotlight and never looked back. Oh the simple joys of life!

Visiting the Past

Last week my daughter enjoyed a wonderful camp with the Audubon Society. The camp headquarters is at the Rust Manor House. It is a historic mansion in Leesburg, Virginia ~ the site of a Show House I did years ago. It was funny to be back in the house and, of course, I visited the room I did ~ The Library. Here are photos of the room before I did it, during the Show House, and now...

I know the house is used for weddings and such. All the designers left the window treatments behind. It is still a stunning house with beautiful architecture. It makes me very happy to see the house flourishing and being home to teaching kids all about nature. My daughter had a blast! Thank you Audubon Society for hosting the show house and camps for all ages during the summer. It was a true pleasure then and now for all.

BeautifulX2 Curio Tables at Home

Here are my smallest BeautifulX2 Curio Table in ivory in their temporary home. I think they are lovely drink tables. My friend, Pam, thought a grouping of these at varied heights would be fantastic. I couldn't agree more. They were designed to be as such either the same table at varied heights or different size tables grouped together. What did I place inside of them?

Nothing yet. We're getting ready to move so I haven't placed the seashells in them my daughter collected on one of our vacations but I think the off white shells will look splendid on the blue background.

Here is the distressed black one (size 22" diameter) in my client's home. The picture is awful as I forgot my camera so I snapped this with my Blackberry. They look fabulous in the room. A pair flank a floating sofa.

Here is why I love these tables so much... this is going to get personal. Stop now if you do not want to see me naked :)

You may have seen this vignette before in my master bedroom. I replaced the glass and crystal table (you see it off to the left) with the 22" table. I always thought the glass and crystal table was beautiful (still do) but it was just a bit too small ~ disproportionate to the chair and floor vase. Also, I think the bedroom is a very personal place. A place to have see beloved art and memories pertaining to one's relationship with their spouse (partner, lover.... you get the picture). I love this vignette. It is very meaningful and precious to me. The art is of a passionate embrace. Now ~ just below it is...

a picture of me when pregnant with Lauren. Below that inside the table is Jim and mine wedding album. Cheesy?? Maybe but I love stuff like this. Placing precious thoughts and memories together. This vignette is my life with Jim.

That is why I designed the BeautifulX2 Curio Table series. Elegant and sleek on the outside ~ beautiful... and filled with happy memories on the inside ~ beautiful... hence the BeautifulX2 Table.

My Media Cabinet at Home

The media cabinet I designed for my private furnishing line was placed in its new home today. The piece is 11' tall so it took a bit of muscle to install it but I have to say ~ I love it. The doors function exactly the way I designed it due to specialty hinges.

When the doors are open and placed in the parallel position to the cabinet, they stay that way. They do not swing. I adore that feature especially since it is such a large piece. The door swing is quite fantastic so this stay in place feature is a must have.

This project is almost finished. I'm looking forward to having professional photos taken so you can see it in its entirety.

I still have not come up with a name for the cabinet. Any ideas?

Great Room on its Way to Beautiful Part III

Here we are again. I admit, these pictures were taken a little bit ago but I want you to see the progression from the last time. If you want to see it from the start, see Part I here and Part II here.

The cabinetry is completely installed as well as the hood...

There is one of the counter stools ~ from the Kristin Drohan Collection.

Recall how the cabinets ended prior to the door? Well, no more. This area was made into a slightly separated display area. My client will display a cherished collection she will get from her father. Lovely!

Now that is an island that my client will be able to do all her baking on. The granite is not installed yet but there will be a 12" over hang that will increase counter space even further. Now for the bells and whistles. Are you ready??

Large two tiered drawers under the Wolf cook top. Don't you love the knife block drawer? Remember this piece stored in the front hall?

And here's what it does...

Completely see through pull out pantry one may easily walk around. Nice! Here is a gadget every baker should have. Now you see it...

Now you don't. Don't forget to place on outlet inside the cabinet or very close on the outside so there really is no muss, no fuss.

Got utensils? Here's the place for them!

Got dishes and bowls? Two drawers for them.

Remember the half wall with the columns? It is now a full bank of cabinets and drawers (still under cover)...

The pulls and knobs I specified for this job are perfect transitional designs...

And the creme de la creme ~ the media cabinet the follows the stair line...

I can't wait to unveil it! Here's a fantastic detail... recall the cold air return? Those are a necessary nuisance. No problem ~ just conceal it in the cabinetry...

No one will ever have to know.

My client is so thrilled. She has moved all her kitchen items that were stored in the dining room to her new cabinets. Everything fits and she still has plenty of storage room remaining.

So far, so good?

Lighting for the Living Room

Today I have a guest post from Arcadian Lighting. When they contacted me about doing a guest post, I was thrilled. I asked them to do a piece about the importance of layered lighting. I think it is critical to illuminate and accent a great design and to be able to complete certain tasks with ease. Take it away Arcadian Lighting...

Lighting any room in your home is more complex than just turning on a single overhead lighting fixture. Yes, a ceiling fixture will provide light for your room, but it will create a boring, flat light that will wash out any sort of ambiance you have created with your furniture and décor. Not to beleaguer ceiling lights, there are many styles and types that work well in a space when combined with other types of light fixtures.

Like furniture and other design elements that we layer to create a warm, inviting, polished space, lighting must also be layered. By choosing a selection of different types of lighting fixtures, you can create lighting “scapes” and zones within your living room. Maybe you like to curl up and read a book in your favorite armchair or watch a movie from the sectional or you've hung art over the fireplace you want to highlight. There is a different type of light for each of these tasks. A combination of ceiling lighting, table lamps, floor lamp and wall lights will bring your room to life. And isn't that what a living room is all about?

Beginning from the top, let's look at lighting on the ceiling. We mentioned the standard ceiling fixture that many of us have in our homes, especially in our bedrooms. From Mission to Modern, Classic to Contemporary, there are many styles to choose from besides builder grade globes. A step up from a ceiling fixture is a chandelier or pendant light. This can be a focal point for your room and add sparkle and glamour to the space. In combination with a central ceiling light or on its own, recessed lighting is a versatile lighting option. Say you want to highlight a painting or a wall of built-ins, create lighting zones for watching movies or entertaining, recessed lights can do it. Put them on zones and dimmers for maximum versatility. The above room is a superb example of using recessed lighting and a central light. But there is something missing -- task lighting.

While recessed lighting and a chandelier can wash a room in light, you'll want to add lighting closer to the action. A table lamp on a side table or a floor lamp can provide light for reading or other tasks. Table lamps and floor lamps can create a more intimate feeling in the room when they are the sole source of light. Pairs of table lamps or as in this room, with an added floor lamp off to the side, create visual interest in the room as well.

I thought a little preview of my Media Cabinet and Curio Tables would be nice. These pictures are literally in my fabricator's workshop or just outside ~ not very fancy but they look good even in these surroundings! I adore the clean lines and little surprizes.

Here are the ivory BeautifulX2 Curio Tables ~ the 12" and the 22". I'm using the 12" as drink tables and the 22" to display a wedding album.

I love the stretcher, toe cap, and finial details! Isn't that the sweetest thing??!

Here is the Media Cabinet. I have not named it yet. What do you think it should be called? This one is quite large as it was sized for a two story great room application. I love the softness of the arcs and the pizazz of the bronze - silver finish. The mirror will reflect the light and beauty of the rest of the room.

The Many Faces of Painted Wall Stripes

Today I have a very informative post by Yelena from House Painting Tutorials on the art of wall stripes in your designs. Take it away Yelena...

I love the versatility of wall stripes. The clean, tailored effect they create is so timeless, stripes can look equally appropriate in both period and contemporary decors... and every style in between.

And with paint, you have virtually unlimited possibilities and complete control over the final result (you decide how bold or subtle, formal or laid back, basic or sophisticated the stripes will be depending on the color combination, direction, size and pattern you choose).

For example, vertical wall stripes look traditional and classy (unless done in some funky color combo), and help draw the eye up toward the ceiling, creating the illusion of more height in the room.

The optimal size for vertical stripes is usually 6 to 8 inches; wider stripes will look less formal, while smaller ones can get too busy looking if painted on all 4 walls.

To create perfectly vertical stripes, you will need a plumb line (that you can even make yourself in a pinch - with a piece of string and a small weight).

Horizontal wall stripes look contemporary and casual, and have the effect of "pushing out" the walls, resulting in the illusion of a bigger room.

Horizontal stripes are best sized at about 12 inches or even wider, and require a carpenter's level to lay out.

Diagonal wall stripes are pretty uncommon and look somewhat exotic. They create an illusion of movement in the room: in fact, the effect is so powerful, this treatment is best limited to only one wall.

For laying out diagonal stripes on a wall, you will need a partner and a snap line.

Now as far as color combinations for your stripes, here are 3 approaches that always work great:

1) Pull a color combo from something already present in the room - it can be fabric (upholstery, pillows, etc), a painting or a wallpaper border (like Paula did in beautiful Lauren's room below).

This method is as easy as painting by numbers, but do tweak the value and intensity of the colors if needed, to prevent the walls from competing with the inspiration piece.

2) Using variations of the same paint color is another way to come up with a successful color combination for your wall stripes.

The easiest way to do that is to pick the colors from the same paint strip (neighboring shades will look very subtle, like shadows, when used together, so if you want more visible contrast, keep the colors at least 2 shades apart).

3) Stripes painted in the same color, but different sheens look utterly elegant and understated. Your walls will almost come to life as the stripes will fade away and reappear, depending on the lighting and the angle from which you view them.

To create the look, all you have to do is apply the base coat in your desired color, and then use clear polyurethane in a satin finish for striping the walls.

I could go on and on, but all good things must come to an end, they say :) But before I wrap up this post, I want to leave you with these 3 useful tips that might come in handy on your next wall striping project:

- Use only low-tack, blue painter's tape for taping off your stripes. This tape is specifically designed to be used for painting projects like this (unlike masking tape - which is almost guaranteed to rip off your base coat when you remove it).
- After taping off the stripes, use the back of a plastic spoon and press along the edges of the tape to minimize paint seepage. This step is especially important to do if you are re-using the tape (yes you can do that).

- When you want the sharpest, cleanest lines possible, here's the thing to do:

Tape off the stripes, then use a small brush to paint along the edges of the tape with the base coat color. Once that is dry, apply the accent stripe color as usual.
What this little trick will do is help you seal the edges and completely prevent the accent/stripe paint color from seeping under the tape.

Great Room on its Way to Beautiful Part II

YIKES!

Calm down, that is not where we are now but I think it is important to see the process. Yes, there is just like my post about wearing curlers. To get to the state of gorgeous, first comes stages that are less pretty.
The half wall and columns are gone.
The closet is also gone and the trip hazard has been filled in.
Here's a better view of the resolved 'floor just ending.'

Now we move onto the first phase of installation.
The fantastic wide plank hard wood floors are installed. Next comes cabinetry...

The family room served as the holding zone until the cabinets were completely installed.
Except for this large one in the front hall. What the heck is that?

Great Room Making Its Way to Beautiful

For me, it is always fun to follow a project along in its transformation. Here is a project I am currently working on that is coming along quite nicely. Today I'll show you some before pictures.
My client had the two tiered island which left little actual work space for her. She is an avid baker so counter space was very important. There also was not enough storage ~ a very common issue.
This was a closet that wasn't used very much. It stored items that were easily stored elsewhere. I knew I could put this premium space to better use.
Other issues ~ half wall with columns. Hmmm... half walls have their place (rarely if you ask me) and notice how the cabinetry ends prior to the door. More space to utilize.
This is a trip hazard and has adds no aesthetic or space value. An easy issue to fix.
The columns just closed in the kitchen. See the trip hazard on the right? The floor just ends.
Here is where the media cabinet was (and still is). They thought about placing the television over the mantel. I really use that option as a last resort. I know it is all the rage but disrespecting the lovely stonework would be a crime. The wall is awkward and we have the cold air return to contend with but not large issues to address.
Oh yeah ~ the powder room. This is just off the kitchen and in need of face lift and general updating just like the kitchen.

This great room (kitchen and family room)/butler pantry project is wrapping up. This is only a portion of the project as a whole. There are a few details to attend to but the major items are finished. I'm thrilled with results. In the next two weeks, their BeautifulX2 Curio Tables will arrive, art will be hung and accessories placed. I cannot wait for my professional photographer to take his shots to really show you its beauty. My Nikon can only show so much.

Perks of Susan G. Komen Walk Training

As some of you may know, I doing the Susan G. Komen 3-day for the Cure. I haven't started following one of the prescribed training programs yet but I have been walking. Today my team mates did a 10 mile walk~ too long for me as I haven't walked more than four until today. Today I walked a little over five miles. I feel pretty good. My feet held out, which is a bit surprising. It's my lower back and hips that are a bit sore. Perhaps some of you out there have advice for me. I saunter a bit when I walk so perhaps I haven't learned the fine art of the 'marathon walk with purpose.' If you'd like to check out my walk page, here it is. I've been wondering if training alone or in a group would be better for me. I have to say that walking alone today was quite enjoyable. First of all it is a lovely day. Temperature is ~65, sunny, no humidity. I walked in my neighborhood , which is quite lovely itself. The grass is a vivid green and all the manicured homes looked splendid. The other thing is that we are in the market to move within our community to a larger home. Walking today led me to find a new house on the market in the style that I adore. I am calling our realtor to set up a tour. Here's the thing... when I was looking intently at this house and I continued to walk, the next house over offered an exquisite site ~ a rippled, shirtless 'V' landscaper with a butt as high as just done saline breasts. Oh my!!

I admit, I gawked. I may have even strained my neck as I continued walking AND my gawking. Wow! I did not get to see his face but I can fill in that blank a dozen times over sustaining my fantasies for at least a couple of months. Please don't place me in the Trump category for sexualizing. I just enjoy beauty in any form if it presents itself to me and man, what a present that was. I pictured that site several times along my walk and thought that if I walked behind him for the 3 day, I'd be wanting a fourth.

So you see the training has benefited me in more ways than one. It benefits me, it benefits others.. a win-win situation.

Tomorrow, I walk again ~ same route of course. I wonder if there was a sign in front of that house with the landscape companies name on it. I didn't see one but my eyes were occupied so maybe I just didn't notice it. Do landscape companies work on Sunday? Hmmm??!!.....

Whether you need a custom chair to fit a color palette, match a favorite table lamp, a copy of an antique chair or a chair with specifications related to an injury or physical requirement, custom ordering opens up many possibilities. However, lots of choices can also be overwhelming. If you’re considering custom ordered chairs, there are some key points to incorporate into your decision.

Budget
A custom made chair will more than likely cost more money than a chair bought right off the showroom floor. Decide ahead of time how much you can spend and don't forget to factor in delivery charges and taxes.

Research

Castles

You may have read in a previous post or in my newsletter that I have a client who would like 'castle' style and architecture in their home. This is such an interesting concept to me. I spent much time at Market looking for suitable furnishings, searched antique websites and local dealers, all for a select few that will end up in the design. I decided to also search for castles and their current decor. I found quite a bit on Architectural Digest's website ~ everything from a castle in Kenya to Pierre Cardin's home to England and Scotland... all quite stunning with some similarities and some differences.

Opulence appears to be in abundance in many.

But for others, simplicity reigns.

Gorgeous woodwork and architecture are a common thread, inside...

and out.

Ceilings are never ignored whether they are finished with molding...

or beams ~ they all present their grandeur and elegance.

Furniture can be quite elaborate...

but these castles also show a casual side.

Large is the norm, in scale and motif...

and in scenery.

A lot to take in and digest. I am having fun interpreting and scaling it for a home who's square footage is a bit less than your average castle. Although, THIS home is the most important castle in the world to its occupants and so it shall be to me too.

High Point Spring 2011 Palette

It is always fun to go Market and see what palettes get the most attention. I thought for sure that pink was going to have a large following given that it is the pantone of the year. Not so. It did have its day particularly at Pearson... However, the colors that dominated this Market was turquoise and teal. Where is the best place to see the Market palette?? Global Views ~ of course! Their award winning showroom is always done to perfection. Take a look...

The reps working in the showroom all wore this palette as well. They were walking billboards ~ you knew exactly where they worked even when not in the showroom. They also mixed in lime green... Below is a striking palette with lime green, black and white...

The picture does not do it justice. The green just popped. I really loved it. Arteriors was getting in on the turquoise game as well... They also featured red, which I haven't seen in a while. It actually was refreshing to see red in action. I love these little tables. They have a red wash on them that is very well done. I feature red myself for my Beautifulx2 Curio Tables. I little pop of red goes a long way.

Literally the turquoise and teal were everywhere. I wonder when the pink will come into play? We'll have to see what the Fall Market has in store for us.

Lauren's Room Transformation Continues

This is where we started. The day the painters were scheduled to come, Lauren kissed each one of the fairies and the unicorn in her mural good-bye and hugged the castle. She was a little sad. I gave her a hug and asked, "Do you want to continue with the transformation?" "Yes Mommy, I do, I just wanted to let them know (the fairies, unicorn, and castle) that I loved having them in my room."

After the painters thoroughly discussed it, they came up with their plan of action and got started...

What a process this was! The owner asked if he could please have pictures of the room when it is complete. Of course! Did I happen to mention my daughter loves PINK??...

We added crown molding to form a distinct break between the pink walls and ceiling. Three shades of pink was used along with pin stripes in black gloss and metallic silver. Where did I get this palette from?...

Her rock star border of course!

Placed at chair rail height. I'm not much into borders but when she saw this one, Lauren said "I have to have it!" Ok my love :)

This is her drape fabric. Simple panels with black and white bobble tassel fringe on the lead edge.

When my Miss Lauren walked into the room after it was painted, her face was priceless. She looked at me and said with a big smile, eyes wide open, "I LOVE IT! Mommy, you're so awesome!" I feel the same way about you my love... every single day.

Onward...

I haven't joined the party for a while but I think this qualifies for the great start to a metamorphosis ~ BNOTP Metamorphosis Monday!

Bunny Williams at Market

I really like Bunny Williams' comfortable style so naturally when I read that she was showing her BeeLine Home line at Market, I had to stop in. She was a gracious host and humored me with a picture. Below are a few of her furnishings that I enjoyed. This mirror is so versatile. It can be seen as traditional or contemporary dependent upon the other furnishing in the room. Take a look at the wallpaper. It surrounded you in the showroom and made everything feel so fresh. Love the orderly scroll. Beautiful table. Again, can be placed in just about any style room. One of the things are really loved was her use of linen as the main upholstery fabric. Everything was crisp, simple, and elegant. I really like this chest. See what's on top?? Bunny WAS a wonderful host. She kept a well stocked bar for her customers. I would have partaken accept that I was there at 9:30 in the morning! Love the profile of this chair. Love the wood on this piece. Elegant and refined. VERY comfortable! The regal legs are a nice touch.

I thought this was the sweetest thing ~ love the dog in the wallpaper, love the bowl waiting for him to come alive. Made me smile each time I passed it.

Bunny also did a seminar on Monday. I wanted to go but I did not. Let's just say that closing the club the night before had me a bit under the weather that day... but it sure was fun ;-)

Beautiful Blues and Oh Those Views...

No doubt you've seen these incredible pictures in Architectural Digest but I couldn't help but adore them one more time. These are a few photos of a two year redesign from architect Carlos Aparicio high in the sky. You know I am fond of blue. I have it in my own living room and sun room. It is used wonderfully here. The art is magnificent. The human form is my favorite for almost any medium. I love the floor and ceiling echoing the other. Here's more... Here is my day in this fabulous place. I enjoy the view for hours on end...

I do some work in my chic study and enjoy the views for hours on end...

After a hard day's work, I relax and soak and enjoy the views for hours on end...

I retire to my soft and cozy bed and dream of the views for hours on end.

The end.

Transformation Begins...

And so the transformation begins. Here is Lauren's little girl room. From the corona hangs crocheted drapes made by Jim's grandmother. This was my favorite part of the room. I felt as if Lauren's great grandmother was embracing her each night as she slept. Her room was adorned with pictures of her family... Her grandmothers, her grandfathers, Jim and I, and all her first cousins. I used baby pictures for some. We made three boxes for items to go in ~ donation, trash, and memory... Many things went into the memory box including the beloved drapes... This morning before Lauren left for school, she literally kissed the unicorn and each fairy good-bye in her mural... Here are my painters reviewing the complex horizontal paint job before them. My painter wants pictures when all is said and done. "This one is for the books." Of course I can accommodate that request. You had a glimpse of what's to come... As we go through the process, I will fill you in. It really is going to be vastly different from the princess room it once was but as Lauren grows and wants to reflect her own sense of style and personality, the room must grow with her. I just hope I can stay with her through it all and nurture all that is to come.

Groovy Orange

I went to 1st Dibs looking for some groovy orange dining chairs. 1st Dibs did not disappoint. The problem... I can't decide :) I love them both and either would work well. I am leaning toward the first set as I think they are more timeless. The second set is quirky, which I also love. Hmmm??? Thoughts?

Congratulations to Mariette Himes Gomez! Ms. Gomez is the 2011 ASID Designer of Distinction Award winner! Avery well deserved award for one of my favorite designers. Mariette has won numerous award and appears in the AD Top 100. I have blogged about her beautiful designs before and pleased to do it again.

Timeless elegance is how I would describe her work. I have awed over designs Mariette did years ago just like the ones she does today. That is a truly gifted designer ~ to be able to create a room that never tires. Please enjoy a few of Ms. Gomez's lovely designs and you'll understand her award of distinction.

Artful Home and Project Hope

One of my favorite vendors is stepping up to the plate to aid Japan in their great time of need ~ Artful Home.

They partnered with artist Jeff Crandall. Jeff creates these lovely glass bottles with important messages etched on them. They are simple and gorgeous. The one selected for this campaign has the words HOPE - Warning: Do Not Abandon. Fitting don't you think?

Until March 23rd, Artful Home will donate 100% of the proceeds of the sale of Jeff's bottle to the Red Cross to aid the victims in Japan.

Glorious Doors

I received my copies of Architectural Digest and Elle Decor. I sat leisurely perusing them this weekend. I was a bit under the weather so these shelter magazine were a great escape. I always find something that truly takes me away to another place. This time it was doors. Not just any type of door but ones that connect you to the world beyond. This one comes from the Shifting out of Neutral story in Elle Decor...

I love the arch, the iron motif, and the diffused light. This is a front door so privacy is important, which the frosted glass provides. What about a back door though...

Ahhhhh, that's a breath of fresh air ~ literally. This comes from Renaissance Man (aka Richard Shapiro) who's beach front home appears in Architectural Digest. His home is stunning and the views magnificent.

Its amazing to me how a door can bring with it so many visions and dreams.

This morning Jim and I attended Lauren's award ceremony. At her school, they have monthly awards for certain traits or behaviors. Students and teachers all vote. Lauren received the award this month for Fairness and Honesty.

Look at that sweet face (ok, I may be a tad bias... but....).

Classic Style

I just love Anne Hathaway. She seems like a Hollywood starlet not spoiled by the razzle dazzle that comes with her craft. She is alway impeccably dressed. Anne has such a wonderful, classic style ~ long, flowing hair, fantastic smile, and casual demeanor. She also happens to be a very good actor that has beat the odds of starting young and staying clean and focused.

Lovely, just lovely.

This dress in particular struck a chord with me. The elegance of it. It reminded me of days gone buy when women would be a bit more demure in their appearance. I appreciate that more than seeing one's bulging cleavage. Believe me, if one has breasts to flaunt, this dress will do the trick as it hugs the body and shows off Anne's curves. I find I am drawn to the classic with a modern twist. My BeautifulX2 Curio Tables (see yesterday's post) is all about just that ~ an update of a classic.

Here is the creme de la creme ~ the surprise of the backless. I adore the backless dress when the front is demure. It's a wow factor as classic as they come. This type of dress always reminds me of the touch of surprise and wow by upholstering the back of a chair in a sensational fabric while keeping the rest of the fabric simple.

It's like keeping one's make-up simple and then experiencing the pop of the ruby red lips.

For me this translates into the pop of color in a predominantly neutral room.
